Modern medicine within the Vaustian Republic is highly varied depending on what resources are available.

Traditional methods involve the use of both herbs and synthetically produced
products.  Minor surgery is available, and is performed with anesthetics.  While these cures are relatively inexpensive, many healers and herbalists lack formal training.  As such, a healer's reputation is very important.

More expensive treatments can be provided by dorser surgeons.  Dorser surgeons use traditional techniques as well as small creatures knowns as dorses.  Dorses are microscopic symbiotic insects.  Some dorses react to blood and other bodily fluids, changing color and behavior to give vital information about a patient's health.  More complex dorses can be introduced into a patient's body to decrease healing times, remove toxins, provide nutrients and even grow new organs if the surgeon is skilled enough.

The proper breeding and preparation of dorses is a precise and difficult process.  Much of a dorser's art is in the proper care of these creatures.  It is very easy to cause great harm or illness with improperly managed dorses.  This discourages the wise from attempting to breed and use dorses without explicit training.
